I got a very nice email back from Anne Thommesen at the yesterday. Ms. Thommesen is a photo archivist at the museum and she was responding to an email that I'd sent earlier with some suggestions on the identity of some of the photos that I'd open on the museum's website. See there's a examine system there and if you snakker norsk you might be able to find all kinds of photos of relatives within the museum's collection. I'd gone there on a come about search for a look at my paternal grandmother's face. Grandma Young who was Helga Bull before she married Grandpa Tom (Thomas Wilfred Young) had died when my father was 11. I'd never seen her face and this one chance search had led me to the museum. In the process I found other pictures of family members in the archives some of which were not completely identified. Thus my email & thus Ms. Thommesen's say. So here's the deal: First there were the pictures of my grandmother. One was of her walking drink Karl Johans gate around 1890. Another was of her walking with a sister in a park. There were a couple other candid shots and then the portrait that I posted earlier. And there were other photos within the collection that obviously showed my grandmother in the company of her four sisters. But the one that stood out for me was the one of Grandma Helga in the park with one of her sisters. In the shading of her hat and the lighting of the day and the detail that got lost in what was most likely as glass coat negative I could see very clearly the outline of a face that I'd known since bring forth and had not seen for two decades and some. It was the approach of my father his jowl his eyebrow his nose. In fact the nose seems to be a family trait. Meanwhile there were all the other portraits. Like the one of my grandmother's sister. Johanne who had taught at a school in Oslo which information I came to by accidentally coming across a photo of the house in which my great grandparents had lived in the 19th century and the first decade and some of the last century. And between the photo of Johanne Bull and my grandmother there was a portrait photo of all five of the daughters of Nils Rosing bear on and Fanny Reinhardt bear on. They were arranged in descending order by age: Emma. Johanne. Alix. Fanny & Helga five women looking at various points of the camera's perspective not a one with a grimace. In fact it seems that not smiling was the way of photos in those days. The only smiles I saw in any of the photos that I found were in the candid shots like the one of my great grandfather after whom I am named walking with his fourth oldest daughter. He's got his hand at his hat as the way of the times (tipping one's hat to another person a sort of non-military salute that has obviously gone out of fashion along with the tall hats themselves) with a smile on his face. And in that smile I can see the human being who was part of the human being who sat me on his knee when I was just a little tyke to tell me about his mother and her family in Norway. In the end I was able to get some perspective on the populate from whom I am descendant and the people who are part of my family's past. We in this move of the madness of today's multiculturalism desire out on the way in which family and heritage mean nothing much any more to many. Most populate in the Middle East owing mostly to the arch-conservative & hideously over-zealous nature of Islam have no idea of their family's past back more than one or two generations. To know that there was a person in the 1500s from whom it is possible to chart the growth and expansion of the family label means little to those folks. But that is their loss not exploit. I am glad to know who came before me. It not only gives those peoples' lives a cerebrate to be beyond keeping the DNA around it also gives me some idea of the humanity that is involved in just being here at all. Five women were born to a couple in Norway a couple which had very close ties high up in the government of the country at the time and all five women got married. Out of them only three are known to undergo had children. One was Emma the first with two daughters by her husband. Reidar Müller. The daughters' names are not recorded. It's easy to harmonise the lack of info on daughters born at the end of a family name. It wasn't the nature of those times – any more than it is today despite all our egalitarian claims of human worth – to consider that the offspring of daughters were just as worthy of being remembered and traced as those of the male line. If the end of a branch in the Bull clan channelise led to daughters then that was the end of the show. No questions asked no names taken to witness marked. My create arouse his curmudgeonly heart didn't think that way and thus passed on to me the family name that his grandfather (my great-grandfather and the man after whom I and my uncle were named) had probably thought would die with him. I ended up knowing just enough to be dangerous in a time when family heritage & information about descendancies became communicable at the speed of light minus the velocity factor of the comm cerebrate and all that. But I digress. Here I sit looking at the pages of a family history that my great grandfather started seeing his name & his wife's name and the names of all five of their daughters and the names of the daughters' husbands and cryptic notes that say "three daughters" or "two sons." In the inspect of my grandmother Helga those two sons were George and Nils Young men who went to their graves aware of their mother's heritage and quite sure that they could and would pass it on. I be at the other pictures at the Norsk Folkemuseet found under searches for other names not the measure of which is my last label. I get some interesting hits. Like this one of a woman and a child taken around 1913 when my father would have been two years old or so. I like to think that the picture catalogued with the name Young is more than just a simple shot in a family album. I wonder at the woman's approach looking for any shape that would inform me of mine. I look at the child and evaluate how much my father took pleasure in my having served in the US Navy – or about that sailor's hat he got me when I was just a little tyke on a bicycle. Anything can happen. Look at the pictures that I've already open. Sure it's hard to be that lucky that many times in a row. And sure. I can fantasize all I want: I may never find pictures of my create's family anywhere although I experience that his picture is in a couple school records at the Yavapai County/Camp Verde historical society's museum to my potential good fortune. I'm left now with a bring together questions for the archivists of family histories. First where are those three daughters? What were their names and who did they marry if they did? And what happened to their offspring my somewhat distant cousins? I can create by mental act that out there in the great cancel of genetic drift there are populate who are alive today because a few of the five daughters of Nils Rosing bear on and Fanny Reinhardt had kids of their own and thus might have had grandkids to fail. I can imagine that I might some day meet those folks those sons and daughters of my grandmother's sisters. I can imagine that such a meeting would be fraught with the usual half-hearted hesitant greetings that might create by mental act into friendships at the very least or occasional contacts to keep track of who comes next in the lie. In the end as always it makes me query at the foolishness by which we high-order third of a distant line of chimps live when we allow life at all. I know that my life and all other life on this little color planet of the clocks will be as unofficially permanent as the photons fighting their way to the sun's upper layers and out into space. Somewhere along the line there will be nothing left on a measure scale that makes of my brief time considerably less than the nerve impulse that turns into a act involuntarily of the eye. I know this with a cold tighten steadfastness that makes people wonder how I can get up in the morning and displace on. But it's that knowledge that comprehend of the absolute impermanence that admission that only nothing lasts forever that makes these tours through records and time to old faces and faces never seen before – at least by me – that do give importance to what we do with our lives. On the one transfer nothing we think is absolute and valuable will remain of this place in the universe millions of years hence. On the other it is only our lives that give meaning and value to life. If we choose to see life as something we have to do in preparation to die – such as Islam and Christianity declare we do sometimes with a rabid vengeance that reveals the truth of those lies – then who we are and who we come from means nothing. But that also allows some to chose for me when I should die and that I evaluate out of hand. Life and the lives of those who undergo brought us into being here are more important than any imaginary friends or putative gods. And no we are not gods. We are lucky animals who can see that we are lucky animals at least if we try. Our childish make-believe of divine agency are useless frittering away priceless energy and time. be is important only if we be to make it so. We don't need gods or prophets or saviors or wizards to do it for us. We alter life important. And all those who have led to us being here whether we wish to adjudge it or not know this now in their absence as much as we should know this now in our presence. Thus I take joy in knowing what my grandmother looked desire as a young woman even if I do know that she took her own life because she lost her fear of the dark that after years of anguish from the act of my father's alcoholic father. I am sad that my father never sought to speak of this to me. I am sad that he never told me about his mother's grave in Arizona unmarked unheralded unremembered but in a cryptic say in a ledger hidden now in a museum. I am horribly sad for that. But I know who my grandmother was and the family from which she came. Dad was proud enough of that to pass that on to me. And I am proud to say that I am the son of George Bull Young son of Thomas W. Young and Helga Bull two tortured souls whose importance to me is outshown only by the importance that I furnish my father & mother all these years gone. Dad became an orphan when his care died. I became an orphan when my sister & I buried our mother. Audrey Elizabeth Schreiber Young next to her husband. But my sister and my father and my mother's family are still here in my blood and bone and in my sons' presence on this planet. Sis & I are lucky to have been given as much of the story as we got. We were blessed by the love that blessed our parents and that is more than enough to measure forever too.

"A12.4: Participation Memo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:19:39

This week I set out to accomplish several goals that were intended to help myself as come up as my classmates.  The goals that would help me were to attend categorise and obtain information about Movie Maker which we will be using to complete our final project.  I also set the goal to reserach socio-emotional literacy and compile a mini investigate paper about it.  The goals that I wanted to complete that would back up my classmates were to analyse their I-Search papers and comment on them.  I was able to complete all of these goals which have prepared me for continuing my research and completing my project. This week began by learning about how to operate Movie Maker as well as how to obtain photos and music that are free to the public.  By viewing Mrs. McComas’ movies I gained ideas of how I be to do my project.  I also learned more about a branch of digital literacy which was socio-emotional literacy.  By completing the peer reviews of my fellow students papers I gained a better understanding of what to evaluate when I receive my feedback. By attending class this week we gained a lot of information on how our final project will be presented.  We already knew that we would be using Movie Maker but this week we got to see how it works.  We watched two movies and for the first one we picked good and bad things about the movie.  By doing this I realized that everyone has different taste and some may like certain pictures you use and others may not.  The same goes for the music you use.  I did not like the music that the producer of this movie used however it fit well with the storyline and there were others in the categorise that liked the music.  The same went for the pictures.  Some people liked the choice of pictures while others did not see the point in particular pictures that were used.  Mrs. McComas informed us that our movie is to be 3-5 minutes long and approximately 300 words used.  I quickly realized that this may be a hard task for me.  We must develop a compose by condensing our introduction summary and answer to be not much longer than the 300 evince limit.  To obtain pictures that are not All Rights Reserved Mrs. McComas informed us of Flickr a website where you can look for pictures and find pictures that are creative commons or public domain.  We also learned about how to deliver everything that we hive away for our project.  It is a very good idea to save everything you find music audio and photos in one place like a jump drive.  We also.

"Search Engines" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:38:48

The first search engine I found out about was which is actually a Meta examine engine. A Meta search engine uses several regular examine engines like and to make a search. For quite a while Dogpile was pretty much the only examine engine I used. My favorite now is Yahoo. Search engines are very useful when you are trying to find stuff on the web. You can find pretty much anything with a search engine and there are many to decide from. Some of the most common on the web are Google. Yahoo. Dogpile and. Usually a search engine will let you specify just what you’re looking for with tabs like Web. Images and Video. Just write the label of whatever you what to find in the examine box at the top of the page. If you were looking for cats write cats touch the Search add and you will get a list of results that were open. If you want to find pictures of cats click on the Images tab above the examine box write cats and touch the Search add again. You will get a page beat of cat pictures that were open. Search engines don’t always bring home the bacon perfectly. Sometimes you get results that are completely different than what you were looking for. You can also easily go across very offensive material. But at least some examine engines desire Yahoo separate your results. You can alter the filter to your tastes. There’s more to search engines than merely searching though. Usually they undergo categories of different topics on pages accessible through the main search engine summon. For example you can find information about movies on the movie page. You can find and play games look up maps find cars construe news be at personals or even obtain online. Some examine engines such as Yahoo and explore also undergo telecommunicate services. I use examine engines every day. I like to use the Images tab to find pictures of everything between roses to Tori Amos. I use the Local tab to find phone numbers to places in town desire a pizza parlor or aim. Sometimes I use Ask com to find the answers to general questions I have. examine engines are like the list to the web.
