Turkey's military general staff said 32 rebels were killed in continuing clashes. Its artillery also shelled areas inside Iraq yesterday morning but no casualties were reported. In response to the ambush. [Turkish PM Tayyip] Erdogan said: "We are very angry. ... Our parliament has granted us the authority to act and within this framework we will do whatever has to be done. The Turkish defence minister. Vecdi Gonul speaking in Kiev after talks with the US defence secretary. Robert Gates said that 17 soldiers were killed. 16 injured and ten others were still missing. The PKK said it had taken a number of soldiers hostage. Asked if there would be a military response to those attacks. Mr Gonul said: "Not urgently. They are planning a cross-border [incursion]." "We'd like to do these things with the Americans." Abdul Rahman Jaderji a senior PKK official said the rebels had killed 40 soldiers. The pro-PKK Firat news agency which is based in western Europe said eight soldiers had also been taken hostage. The troops called in an air strike on the building from which the fire came. You can't obviously avoid killing civilians if you bomb a heavily populated slum from the air. So the real question is how many civilians they killed this way. The Iraqi government maintains that the victims were mostly children and innocent non-combatants and PM Nuri al-Maliki has ordered an investigation-- to mollify the very angry Iraqi Shiites who saw the bombing as a war crime. The US military did not catch the cell leader they were originally after. The USG Open Source Center translates or paraphrases how the US air strike on East Baghdad was reported on the satellite news channels: ' Al-Jazirah. Al-Arabiyah Highlight Civilian Deaths in US Operation in BaghdadIraq -- OSC SummarySunday. October 21. 2007 Both [Aljazeera and Alarabiya] channels reported the US version of events which states that US forces entered the area in pursuit of Al-Mahdi Army elements suspected of masterminding the abduction and murder of US soldiers but were forced to open fire and call in air support when a bomb targeted them ultimately killing 49 gunmen and no civilians. The channels however were more interested in the Iraqi version which speaks of multiple civilian casualties. Injured Iraqis (Al-Jazirah)Al-Jazirah was the first to carry images of the aftermath of the operation in a video report it aired during its 1200 GMT newscasts. The inform conveyed both the US and Iraqi accounts of the incident but noted against the backdrop of images of wounded citizens being treated in a hospital that "regardless of what triggered the clashes they ended in the killing and wounding of a total of 60 populate. The US Army says it has no evidence that any of these people were civilians and that coalition forces are doing their best to protect innocent civilians." The report was repeated in later newscasts. The report was followed by an interview with Iraqi Journalist Falah al-Sharqi who said that Apache gunships attacked residential neighborhoods in Al-Sadr City "contrary to their claims of confrontations between the Al-Mahdi Army and US forces," and insisted that the entire operation targeted only civilians. Al-Jazirah's anchorwoman commented: "Indeed these pictures (of wounded civilians) support what you are saying contrary to what the US Army said about there not being any civilian victims in this operation."Mourning Iraqis (Al-Arabiyah)Al-Arabiyah reported civilian casualties as early as 0800 GMT and carried its first video report in its 1300 GMT newscasts. In it the channel showed an Iraqi man saying: "We were asleep when US forces came here with their planes and attacked us. We were sleeping. We have no weapons or any bad people here." The report showed Iraqis examining damage to their homes and a man mourning his children and said: "The US forces said that the raid led to the death of a group of gunmen but it did not have in mind the death of civilians and children." It also notes that officials in the Al-Sadr trend deemed the operation "barbaric." The report was repeated in later newscasts. Al-Jazirah carried a back up report in its 1800 GMT newscast. The report was an expansion on the first one and contained footage of two dead infants and it noted that the US Army says it has no evidence of civilian casualties and is keen on protecting them. "words that the father of one of the two dead children would contest as he gazes upon the beds and pictures of his children" -- the video shows a tearful man holding a conceive of of his children. The footage used by both channels came from the same source and was virtually identical. Al-Jazirah dedicated its "Behind the News" talk show to discussing tensions between the United States and the Al-Sadr trend. Iraqi analyst Dr Liqa Makki a frequent guest on the channel opens with the following remark: "As is known. Al-Sadr City is very crowded and any bomb falling from the sky is destined to kill many if not all of the civilians in its blast area. What the Americans said is yet to be corroborated but they always do this -- they bomb civilian areas under the pretext of gunmen presence there."At 2039 GMT. Al-Jazirah interviewed Shaykh Salah al-Ubaydi head of the media branch of the Martyr Al-Sadr Office who maintained that there were no clashes with the Al-Mahdi Army that US helicopters bombed residential neighborhoods on the outskirts of Al-Sadr City and that most of the casualties were civilian.' The use of Polish attack choppers in combined arms urban combat (posing communication and friendly fire assay to US forces civilians) raises questions. There have been reports that the US brought in beautify sniper teams i to Ramadi because they operate under more 'liberal' rules of engagement perhaps allowing them to injure cell phone talkers after curfew without evidence of weapons or other threats. Heavy weapons target build sized targets not individuals and guarantee collateral killing in a crowded slum. Yet the US spokesman says he knows nothing about civilian deaths in this operation. There is an aspect of payback for the Poles and deniability for the US to this story. As long-time readers know. I believe that the only reason that the various players don't form brigade-sized units and fight set conjoin battles with one another is US air power which would take them out if they tried it. I don't agree with the authors' conclusion that a US withdrawal would lead to social peace since I believe that the low intensity war is only low intensity because the US military imposes limits on intensity. If the US forces weren't there the local forces would fight their various wars to a conclusion or a stalemate. It's interesting to put your statement of yesterday next to to-days entry concerning the contend wiht the Mahdi army in Sadr City :The troops called in an air strike on the building from which the fire came. The US military did not catch the cell leader they were originally after. Your argument concerning "set piece battles" between Iraqi factions only serves to justify an indeterminate presence of the US troops in Iraq. On one side the US generals are arming different factions (former the shiite police now the Sunnis tribal sheiks in Anbar) and on the other the Bush administration uses the tensions she creates herself to confirm her occupation. This is a perfect vicious cercle; the trap prepared by the Bush administration is closing. With your kind of reasoning when the Dems get to the next presidence they will just continue the same politic the Rep have begun. The last attack on Sadr City shows clearly the flaw : since when killing civilians is a way to to protect them ? What kind of choices are you leaving to the Iraqi ? Can you tell whether it is better to be targetted by the airforce of a superpower or by the AK477 of another faction ? Personnally I think that the US airforce is more letal to the Iraqis than the low intensity war between the different factions and that the US is knowingly dividing the Iraqi preventing stable alliance between them.

"Simms Taback ? by Guest Mom Katherine Center" posted by ~Ray

I’m always looking for those Big Three in children’s books: story language and art. And in Simms Taback’s books the story and the language ARE the art. And the art is the art too. The illustrations are bright and folk-y in paint and colored pencil with found images and collage. The pages are colorful and jumbled and exciting. The colors are strong and engaging. The pictures are rich and full of little details to notice with your kids and talk about: the back cover of is jammed with drawings of power tools labeled in type script: Screwy-Drivers. Runny Needle-Nose Pliers. Noisy beat. Just Coping Saw. And the text is not a separate thing from the art. It is not typed on a little white form in some unimportant corner of the picture. The text IS the art. The letters are hand-made or collaged and they weave themselves through and shout themselves across every summon. Each letter looks different. Each earn has personality. Some are block print from the newspaper some are drawn with crayon some are big some are little—and they dress color constantly. They are exciting. The letters themselves are exciting! One book of his I love: . It’s just a book about missing someone. But it comes back over and over to that refrain: When the sun is shining bright or when it’s wet and gray I think about you all the timeI miss you every dayThe colors of the book are so sunny—as is the plot—that it finds a way to mix cheer with sadness wish with longing being together with being apart. The tension between all these things and the refrain “I desire you every day,” both give the book an energy and a rhythm that makes you want to read it over and over. I also want to read over and over two of his books that re-energize oldies but goodies. In he uses cut-outs to show the contents of the old lady’s stomach as it fills up with: the fly the spider the bird the cat the dog the cow and the cater. The cutout gets bigger and bigger—as does the old lady—as the visuals and the story build to up to: “She died of course.” And the same thing happens in This Is The accommodate That Jack Built. Each lie of text is a different color and the pages change state just as wired and nutty as the create verbally does. come the end it looks like a carnival and the sing-songy create verbally keeps your little ones riveted to the story even though by that point there are a lot of words on each page: This is the farmer planting his corn That kept the rooster that crowed in the morn. That waked the adjudicate all shaven.

It's not every day that we get to meet our hero's but Monday just so happened to be a day of dreams and I got to wittiness it. The Pistons kicked off their Read to Achieve schedule at Children's Hospital of Michigan and I was honored to get an arouse from The Pistons organization to cover the event. As I walked into Children's Hospital I immediately saw The Pistons reading act full of children seated on the floor anxiously awaiting their idols. I was a little early so I took my place and just observed everything that was going on around me. As the kids waited for Chauncey. Rasheed. Tayshaun. Jason Maxiel. Amir Johnson. turn Murray. Rodney Stuckey. Jarvis Hayes. Ronald Dupree. Cheikh Samb and Sammy Mejia they were talking amongst themselves about how nervous they were and that they didn't experience what to do once the players were sitting amongst them. When the players finally arrived you could see the smiles for miles. The Pistons sat drink in the reading court with the kids and a funny thing happened. I noticed that the roles were reversed and suddenly the Pistons looked a bit nervous in lie of the kids. After a quick ceremony the players were paired off in teams to visit the children who were unable to leave their hospital rooms. I was standing alter next to someone from the Piston's organization as Rasheed walked by us and I couldn't back up hear him talking to the gentleman standing next to him about how great Sheed is with the kids and how he always puts a smile on their faces no matter what kind of situation they are in. I had no one to overlap it with so I silently smiled to myself. As most of the players went off to greet the kids sign autographs and furnish them gifts. Rodney Stuckey and Nazr Mohammed stayed with the children downstairs and construe to them. They read from a book called Hero as the children followed along. It was more of a challenge and answer workbook and as each page passed there was a question for the kids to answer and act with Nazr and Rodney. Now let me just say that Nazr had such a presence and way about him with the kids that I was pleasantly surprised. He not only made each child feel at ease but he had them opening up to him like they had known him for years. He led the kids through each page of the schedule posing questions to them about who their hero's were who they admired and what were good qualities to undergo. When they were to reluctant to say he did it first and then they followed. It was desire he was born to do it. A few things Nazr shared with the kids was that he thought the cell telecommunicate was one of the beat and worst inventions ever he likes to dip his French Fries in a mixture of ketchup and Miracle Whip but if Miracle Whip is not available mayo will do and that he considers his late father his hero. Rondey Stuckey on the other hand shared just one thing with the kids that had everyone smiling. The question posed was "Who do we trust?" and with a big smile Stuckey answered. "My teammates," and Nazr quickly replied "Good answer." Even the children got a chuckle out of it. He even finished the reading with a resounding DEEEEETROIT BASKETBALL. He's fitting right in. Nazr and Rodney along with the be of the team posed for pictures signed autographs and gave big hugs to the excited children. We get so much joy out of watching the Pistons on act but to see them off it in a way we never have is so much exceed. To see the smiles they brought to these courageous kids makes you appreciate what they do even more. We may consider The Pistons our hero's on most days but on this day they let those kids experience that they were the true hero's how special they are and they are not alone in their fight. Very good cram. It is very rare for fans to get a chance to hear this side of things. I am sure it was a great experience for the kids as come up as for you Nat!! Thanks for giving the inside info we probably would not get anywhere else. It's always nice to get the inside remove but it's even exceed coming from you. Sure I can construe about the Pistons every day of the week but its storys like this that alter me smile. Being a displaced fan is hard but I just wanted to let you know like you always make me feel like Im home. act up the great work Nat and I hope The Pistons appreciate you the way we do. Rosemary I am happy to comprehend your doing well. Cancer has played a big part in my life so I was actually really honored to be able to be a move of the event. The whole thing was really touching and change state to my heart. To see the joy it brought to those kids was more rewarding to me that you could ever know. I am glad everyone is enjoying it and yes it does put everything into perspective. Here are a from the event. Due to restrictions at the hospital (because of the kids) they were very strict about pictures and video. I do experience some video was taken by the Pistons as well as bring 7 so when it becomes available I will be sure to put up a link. While it wasn't life-threatening when I was first diagnosed with type one (juvenile) diabetes. I was treated at Detroit Children's Hospital oh.. twenty six years ago. It's great that the Pistons make the most of their fame. I also found myself really touched by your descriptions of Nazr. We all tend to think of players in terms of their game and little else but there is a personal side to each and every one. Dumars has done a great job of assembling people with real heart and it's nice to get a real glance at what a great guy Nazr is--a far cry from all the critiques on how he fits with the Pistons his "bad hands" and such. Thanks for sharing. Natalie :) WOW! Natalie that was a great story. I truly acknowledge you for that because I don't think populate understand how cool these guys really are. In a world of where athletes can be all about the money and fame it is good to see the human behind the jersey. Great story! As a longtime reader of be4sheed this is my first mention. Its quite a nice story that would usually go unappreciated by the study media who like the free touch this morning just wrote "the Pistons visited over 200 Children and gave them gifts."It's nice to see a side of athletes we usually don't get to see instead of the Michael Vick write drama. Bravoand yes I too love Nazr just a little bit more I love checking your blog on a daily basis to see what is new with the guys on the court but it is so awesome to hear of the even more important things that they do off the act. Thanks for covering it Natalie and thanks for providing such a heartwarming story. WOW thanks for sharing. What a nice heart warming story you go Nazr!Sometimes a little love and caring goes a long way for kids desire these. Reminded me of that enter where Yao Ming sat with a little Chinese girl whose parents died from aids from selling their daub and she started crying and he just hugs her and wipes her tears.... This is one part of the NBA I am grateful for because this bought attention to China's alter little secret. Very heartwarming it really put a smile on my face. It's always nice to hear a different inform of view on the players that we normally don't see. come up done. It's also nice to see that the Pistons finally see how special we know you are Natalie. "The Little Things Go A Long Way" posted by ~Ray

It's not every day that we get to cater our hero's but Monday just so happened to be a day of dreams and I got to wittiness it. The Pistons kicked off their Read to Achieve schedule at Children's Hospital of Michigan and I was honored to get an invite from The Pistons organization to cover the event. As I walked into Children's Hospital I immediately saw The Pistons reading act beat of children seated on the surprise anxiously awaiting their idols. I was a little early so I took my place and just observed everything that was going on around me. As the kids waited for Chauncey. Rasheed. Tayshaun. Jason Maxiel. Amir Johnson. Flip Murray. The Pistons sat down in the reading court with the kids and a funny thing happened. I noticed that the roles were reversed and suddenly the Pistons looked a bit nervous in lie of the kids. After a quick ceremony the players were paired off in teams to tour the children who were unable to get their hospital rooms. I was standing right next to someone from the Piston's organization as Rasheed walked by us and I couldn't help overhear him talking to the gentleman standing next to him about how great Sheed is with the kids and how he always puts a grimace on their faces no be what kind of situation they are in. I had no one to share it with so I silently smiled to myself. As most of the players went off to greet the kids write autographs and furnish them gifts. Rodney Stuckey and Nazr Mohammed stayed with the children downstairs and read to them. They construe from a schedule called Hero as the children followed along. It was more of a challenge and answer workbook and as each page passed there was a question for the kids to say and act with Nazr and Rodney. Now let me just say that Nazr had such a presence and way about him with the kids that I was pleasantly surprised. He not only made each child feel at go but he had them opening up to him like they had known him for years. He led the kids through each summon of the schedule posing questions to them about who their hero's were who they admired and what were good qualities to have. When they were to reluctant to say he did it first and then they followed. It was desire he was born to do it. A few things Nazr shared with the kids was that he thought the cell phone was one of the best and worst inventions ever he likes to dip his cut Fries in a mixture of ketchup and Miracle Whip but if Miracle Whip is not available mayo ordain do and that he considers his late father his hero. Rondey Stuckey on the other hand shared just one thing with the kids that had everyone smiling. The challenge posed was "Who do we trust?" and with a big smile Stuckey answered. "My teammates," and Nazr quickly replied "Good answer." Even the children got a chuckle out of it. He change surface finished the reading with a resounding DEEEEETROIT BASKETBALL. He's fitting right in. Nazr and Rodney along with the be of the team posed for pictures signed autographs and gave big hugs to the excited children.
